The drive from Milwaukee to Madison was a breeze. We pulled up to the hotel and I immediately knew the highlight of this hotel would be its location. Read on to find out about my stay at The Edgewater, Madison.
I decided to spend the weekend at The Edgewater hotel in Madison, Wisconsin – not exactly a city that was on my radar. Little did I know that Madison is a vibrant cultural hub of art, music, food, and most importantly, great beer.
Sitting on the waterfront of beautiful Lake Mendota, the views transported me to a relaxed cottage atmosphere (something I wasn’t expecting). This property is just steps from the heart of historic downtown Madison, but I found myself wanting to spend my time near the shore indulging in the scenic views.
First Impressions
We were greeted with friendly mid-west smiles and a smooth check-in. I quickly discovered that this hotel was a go-to destination for those in the know.
I later passed a digital collage wall where I learned that The Edgewater has hosted an array of celebrities, including the likes of Elvis Presley, Elton John, Bob Marley, and even the Dalai Lama… to name a few.
The hotel was bustling with weddings, parties and groups eager to escape for the weekend, yet there wasn’t a chaotic energy about it.
The property feels like a maze, but once I got my bearings straight (and remembered that the lobby was on the 6th floor), I came to appreciate the many hidden pockets to be explored within the hotel. I thought the layers and twists made it remarkably unique in its style and charming character.
Waterfront Rooms
After the long journey, it was nice to walk into a light and airy waterfront room. It’s too bad they don’t all have balconies because the moment I looked out the window I craved a spot where I could peacefully sip on my coffee while I basked in the lake views.
Our Lakeview King room oozed sophistication with luxurious custom furnishings and modern amenities. These rooms gave me the sense of an effortless escape from the bustle of the city. The bathroom amenities were impressive with his-and-hers sinks and a spacious marble shower room.
The Neighbourhood
The Capitol Building has the second-largest dome after the one on Capitol Hill in DC. It’s grand interior is worth exploring. When I wasn’t busy sipping on the best coconut mojito (of my life), I was at the Saturday Farmer’s Market.
It opened my eyes to the eclectic side of the city which blends big city culture with rural countryside comfort.
A local told me that Madison looks similar to how it did decades ago. Think brick sidewalks and tree–lined streets accenting the old buildings that have been restored. And Victorian style homes fitted with (adorable) porch swings.
The Food
There are three main restaurants ranging from refined to deep-fried and delicious. I hate to admit it, but my favourite was at The Boathouse Restaurant. I had my first experience with deep fried cheese curds – apparently a Wisconsin staple.
Don’t let my love of everything unrefined fool you. The property had formal menus where Chef Joe takes global influences and creates new, inspired takes on the Midwestern favorites he grew up on. (They call it Modern Midwestern cuisine.)
